Marinara is a very easy sauce that only requires a few ingredients. Some days when you don’t know what to cook, this recipe comes in handy. You can make it in the time it takes to boil a pot of water and cook up some pasta!
This is a very basic (and quick!) tomato sauce that takes very little time to cook and can be made ahead of time and refrigerated until you’re ready to use it! We like to serve this with angel hair pasta, but it will go with any pasta you’d like!
Ingredients
Makes 4 cups
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 large cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups tomato puree
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 1 large fresh basil stem with leaves removed
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- Sugar, if needed
Directions
Heat the olive oil in a large non-reactive pot over moderate heat. Add the onions and saute until soft and transparent, about 5-6 minutes. Add the garlic and saute until caramelized, about 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes to the garlic and bring to a simmer. Add the oregano and basil and simmer until reduced to a sauce-like consistency, about 20 minutes.
Taste and adjust the seasoning. If the sauce tastes too acidic, add the sugar and cook for 5 more minutes. Remove the basil stem before serving.
